.htaccess Rules Generator

An .htaccess file is a directory-level configuration file (Apache) that lets you manage redirects, rewrites, access rules, caching, and more—without changing the main server config.

Copy the output into a plain text file named .htaccess and upload it to your site’s root folder (often public_html). Always back up your existing file first.

They’re based on common best practices, but every environment is different. Incorrect rules can break your site—test on staging first, then deploy to production once confirmed.

Redirect is a simple directive for redirecting one URL to another. RewriteRule (mod_rewrite) supports conditional logic and complex patterns.

Enable “Deny sensitive files”. It includes a rule that blocks web access to wp-config.php (and other sensitive files).

Apache reads .htaccess on each request. For most sites, well-written rules have a minimal impact, and caching rules often improve performance. For very high-traffic sites, move rules to the main Apache config when possible.
